My name’s hard to pronounce, but policies are easy to understand

My name is hard to pronounce, but my policies are easy to understand. I’m Laoise Holohan, I’m here from Ireland, and I’m a first year Classic Civilisations student, programme rep, one of the proud chicken mothers for Groehampton, and Newman House patriot. In my short time at Roehampton, I’ve been working towards improving the conditions for the people I consider family, specifically for Newman House. I’ve been leading a team to fix the variety of problems we faced with Accommodation, pressuring the Department of Accommodations to be held accountable, and I can now proudly say we have functional door locks (however, I will continue to pressure Accommodations to get a third level of security), two ovens, a fridge-freezer room, and a social space for each floor. My job’s not done yet.

In my role as president, I would continue to oversee that no students are being exploited, however not just for Newman, but all of Digby Stuart; not just against Accommodations, but in every regard. I’m here to help my entire Digby family.

My intentions as president would be:

·         One day a week be posted in the Digby Diner, where any student can approach me with their problems- or even for a cup of tea

·         Have more events for students during weekends and holidays, as a great number of us don’t have the option to travel home

·         More events, such as Sparks, for off-campus students to feel engaged with the Digby community

·         Target the issue of sexual assault on campus, which I have seen affect too many of my family at Roehampton

·         Help build a better sense of community within Digby, with such a large campus it can be hard to feel connected to each other, and I want to work with next year’s flat reps specifically to help our new freshers feel Digby pride

·         Make the Digby Diner a better hub for that community, specifically somewhere off-campus students can congregate after lectures and feel they’re included

·         Raise awareness for campaigns, such as Groehampton, Sparks, GLASS and all the other vital work our brilliant body of students achieve

When it comes down to it, I just want to help. I know as well as anyone how hard it can be away from your home and your family, that’s why I’m ready to be the Momma Lion of this Pride. See you at the next BOP- I’ll be the one in the last-minute costume telling everyone they’re gorgeous.
