Hi Digby,

My name is Jeevan Matharu, more commonly known as Jeeves. I am currently a second-year Psychology student and I am running in this election to be your Digby President.

I have been part of Digby College from my first year and have loved my time here. Having moved from off campus to Bede during the second term in first year I can appreciate how welcoming the college is and I wish to continue this for current and future students.

From coaching and teaching taekwondo I have gained a lot of experience of acting as a voice for students and facilitating communication between students and different departments in the university. I plan to continue this if I get the position of Digby President.

As great as this college is there are always things that can be changed or introduced to improve things:

  • Digby Common Room- This would be a more casual alternative to the diner where students, both on and off campus, can use in their free time to unwind and chill between lectures without being confined to the diner or library. I aim for this base to feature sofas and beanbags for students to sit in comfort with their peers. Southlands have the Reef, Froebel have the back of the union and it is about time Digby got their own space!
  • Female Digby Football Team- It would be fantastic to see a female college football team be created- The Lionesses. After speaking to the current sports president the Lionesses could be formed in the next academic year comprising of both new and old students. The team can start by playing friendly against other college teams as well as other universities, similar to the Lions team currently.
  • Digby feedback Sessions- To ensure the college is always reflecting the students’ needs I will host monthly feedback sessions inviting students to voice their opinions and ideas related to the college. This gives the President and college team an idea of how students feel, and allows valid, up to date feedback to be logged and acted upon.

An important part of student life for me is welfare. Although there is already a strong system in place, accessing it can be complex for students. I plan to improve awareness on how and where to get support depending on the situation. This could be through an extra talk in fresher’s week and posters showing clear visual paths of communication.

I aim to work closely with the Deputy President and hope to host a whole range of activities for the college, including an inclusive fresher’s week event and welcome dinner both in the autumn term and spring term.

Come and talk to me if you see me during campaign week and I’ll be happy to discuss my ideas further. I am very approachable and genuinely care about making the college the best it can be.

If you can’t put me as number one please put me as number two!

Vote Jeeves!
