My name is Avinash Malhotra and currently studying Sports and Exercise Science. I’m currently running for Sports President, which is part of long-term goals to not only improve sport at Roehampton but to expand the Roey family. Sport has not only given me abilities to succeed in certain sports but also in key aspects of my life so far, for example, it has given me skills to bond and work with others, which helped me greatly when making friends at school and when coming to university.

My previous experiences have consisted mostly of competing in Taekwondo at an elite level, which is a rare but rewarding opportunity as it is more than just fighting. It consists of me representing and being the face of people, to give more opportunities to students like me and others.

Trying new sports at university is sometimes a hard task to manage, however, I intend to help by providing a helping hand through Sport Roehampton. Whether you are an athlete or not we all need that something to give us motivation and confidence to start something new. 3 main ideas I wish to work on are:

-          Sponsorship to compete: Throughout Roehampton, we have a few individuals that are sponsored, but some talent doesn’t get recognised, so I aim to extend the sights of sport Roehampton to the smaller clubs, so we can have more people going above and beyond with the name of Roehampton.

-          Intramural cup: A new exciting cup that is hosted on campus, to provide challenge within student's comfort zones. It involves 2 randomly selected sports team going head to head in a sport that is randomly drawn from a hat, so it levels the playing field. This is an exciting way to include the more 'nervous' students and for them to come out of their shell to meet new people and become more confident. Depending on the success of this, it can be added as a tradition for students, as a way to break the ice and bring out the fun.

-          Social media: Sport success from teams on social media is very limited, as most of the 'bigger' teams have taken over and the smaller teams are not recognised when they succeed, so I plan to revive this by introducing account for every sports team e.g. snapchat, instagram and twitter so they can be publicly announced to bring back some fire to Roehampton through these.

During the week coming up to freshers at the beginning of the year, I will collaborate with the presidents and deputy presidents of each campus, to try to encourage more students to participate in the Intramural cup.

Sport so far has taught me so much about myself, but one person isn’t enough so I can’t stress enough how much sport could potentially help you. Are you ready to learn what you don’t in a classroom…? If yes is the answer drop a 1 or 2 by my name.
