Your voice, your choice

Hi Whitelands!
I’m Sophie, a first year Drama student and I’m running for Deputy President of Whitelands College. I love Whitelands, having chosen to live here rather than main campus, it really feels like home to me, therefore it would mean a lot to me to get this role and be able to improve it and help it grow and develop as a community.

I have really enjoyed the social side of things on Whitelands, as it was a great way to make friends. Should I be elected I would like to further this by redecorating part of Canteen. My plan would be to create a form of common room or social hub whilst still retaining space for the Canteen to be used. The addition of elements such as sofas, beanbags, a book swap, a menu that was more aimed at students (and a student budget) and a 24 hour coffee machine would allow it to become a space with multiple functions, such as offering a space for those on campus who want to socialise without drinking or as a more relaxed area to study in during stressful exam periods. Furthermore it could be a location for events such as movie evenings or sports nights, helping to create a lively campus where everyone feels included.

I would also like for your voices to be heard more, as whilst the suggestions page online is effective, there is more that could be done. I propose to make Whitelands issues and requests, such as uni buses stopping at our campus prior to Fez and Grand, much more heard on main campus by increasing relations with the rest of the  university and setting up a page specific to Whitelands and issues within the college, (both to residents and students) that I would be happy to run myself.

Finally, I would like the subject of mental, sexual and physical health to be much more prominent. I would want to work closely with the Mental health officer and the existing support to provide a clear network of people who can help with any issues students may be having. This could be done in conjunction with my plan for the Canteen, as it could provide a safe space in which drop in talks or guidance sessions could take place.

Ultimately I want things to keep on improving in badger land, working with everyone who loves it as much as me. Your voice, your choice Badgers!
