ARRAN OLK

Get on board the Olk-swagen

So, y’all know me by now, I'm Arran. I’m a no-nonsense, get stuff done kinda guy. I’m gonna keep this short, sweet, and to the point. I should also say that none of these promises are too large either, I’m sticking to promises that I can make a reality within the short year, cause it’s far too easy to fall short when you promise things that are brilliant, but unachievable. I’ve broken these ideas down into three main points that are my absolute focuses, and a few secondary points, listed at the end, that I will strive just as hard to make reality, but are already somewhat happening within the university.

My main focus, above any of these points, is to promote self-love. I see far too many people discontent with the way they look, act, the grades they achieve, how active they are. I’m saying, you should love you for you, not for who people want you to be. I wanna start a self-love campaign that lasts all year long to help us all be the best us we can be.

Now to the points;

First point. Social space within the university. I’m sure you’ve been in the library and it’s been too loud or crowded to work. This is because off-campus (and on-campus) students are using it as a social space since they’ve got nowhere else to go. The library turned around and have said if you’re not working then you can’t be there when it’s busy. I think this is ridiculous frankly, but what else can they do. So, my solution’s a simple one, the ground floor in the old library isn’t being used anymore, let’s chuck some beanbags, sofas, hot and cold-water dispensers, speakers and an aux cord, and chill. If not there then we’ll find somewhere else, we have the space we just gotta use it. The library will be quieter and less crowded, it’s a win-win.

Second point. Everyone loves varsity, competitors and spectators. So why don’t we have an arts festival equivalent? Roehampton offers courses in dance, theatre, photography etc, so let’s give them a platform to be seen. I’m currently working with a company to organise a literature based arts festival happening this summer in London, thus have the contacts to make this reality.

Third point. Digby had a burger night in freshers’ week, a fun, casual night where people really got to know each and without having to drink excessively, or at all. Let’s bring it back once a fortnight, get to know each other, and build some stronger bonds within the college.

My secondary points include continuing with the consent, and mental health promotions, two things I feel very passionate about, and about having the music in the union bar match the bop theme, so we can keep our nights out fresh. Much love if you’ve made it to this point and hope to see ya voting in the elections. If not ya first choice, make me second!
