We would like to wish our Roehampton community a happy Black History Month. We are proud as a Students’ Union to have such a unique and diverse community that celebrates each and every student’s unique experience.
2026 Theme:
The theme for this year’s Black History Month is ‘Honouring our Communities’ - which gives us the space to acknowledge and celebrate individuals, organisations, and communities that shape, support, and help Britain to become better every single day.
This theme also recognises that celebrating Black History Month is not just about historical events, or famous black historical figures – it is about unacknowledged and silent histories of every day black people that often go unseen, unrecognised and underappreciated.
Why Black History Month?
It can be too easy for celebrations and achievements to get lost in everything that is happening in the world, especially given the world we live in at present and the rising tensions of identity politics.
However, this is a moment for us all to come together to celebrate each and every one of our Roehampton Black student community members that actively shape, strengthen, and contribute to student life at Roehampton – through acts of leadership, care, creativity, courage – contributing with an unwavering commitment to celebrating black culture that is a joy to see.
Black History Month is not just about remembering the historical legacies and how they serve as powerful reminders of what has been achieved, but also a reminder of the work that still lies in the months and years ahead - and acknowledging the strides that black people are making through their contributions to society.
History has shown us that courage and bravery are some of the most powerful tools for action to change the world and to celebrate the people that continue to show up every day for their community to challenge the status quo, change narratives, challenge prejudice and enable people to have the space to be unapologetically themselves – that is what true power is.
What is going on at Roehampton?
Throughout Black History Month, Roehampton Students’ Union is collaborating with the Society of African Students (SAS) to host a wide variety of events for you to enjoy, from our weekly Book Club, to our Film Night, and even our Festival of Nations event – we can’t wait to celebrate with you.
Take a look at our events page if you want to find out more and get involved!
