September was a busy month for Irene, your VP Education. See what she has to say in her update here!
From saying goodbye to our students at the September Graduation Ceremonies to welcoming new fresh faces during the Freshers’ Festival, this month has been busy, busy, busy!
Student Leadership Training & Graduation Ceremonies
September began on a high note with our university’s Graduation Ceremonies. Our Sabbatical Officer Team proudly supported six ceremonies across all academic schools, celebrating the incredible achievements of our graduating students. Among them were two of our very own officers, Joshua and Sammy, who both graduated this year, a huge congratulations to them for reaching this milestone!
I was honored to take on the ceremonial duty of carrying the university mace during one of the ceremonies. It was a truly memorable responsibility, knowing I was entrusted with one of the most historic and valuable symbols of our institution.
Immediately after the celebrations, our focus shifted back to preparing for the year ahead, as our Residential Leaders and student leaders in a variety of roles returned to campus for the annual Student Leadership Training. This programme is designed to empower students with the skills and confidence to guide, support, and inspire their peers throughout the year.
I had the privilege of co-facilitating a session on Building and Leading Communities alongside some fantastic colleagues from the University. The session sparked thoughtful discussions on creating inclusive environments, nurturing belonging, and developing leadership skills that make a lasting impact. It was wonderful to meet so many new faces stepping into leadership for the first time, while also reconnecting with returning student leaders who continue to grow in their roles.

Freshers' Roundup
The 2025 Freshers Festival was one of our most ambitious and exciting starts to the year yet. Over the course of two busy weeks, our Students’ Union team, in collaboration with University staff and student groups, delivered more than 76 events and activities designed to welcome new students into the Roehampton community. From lively club nights to academic inductions, there was truly something for everyone.
Our programme was deliberately diverse, ensuring that students could find spaces that matched their interests, whether they were looking for vibrant social nights, relaxed daytime activities, or opportunities to connect on a more personal and academic level. Highlights included: our themed evening events such as the Boat Party, Le Fez, and Lightbox, which gave students the chance to experience London nightlife alongside their new peers. For those seeking community and connection in a different setting, we hosted networking opportunities such as the Study Abroad Social, which brought together international and returning students, as well as identity-based Network events, celebrating Roehampton’s inclusivity and diversity.
Importantly, the Festival also placed strong emphasis on academic integration and support, with School Inductions and Welcome Talks helping students to get to know their departments, course leaders, and support systems from day one. The Freshers’ Fair once again proved to be a centerpiece, showcasing Roehampton’s vibrant student societies, sports clubs, and local partners. Students had the opportunity to sign up for extracurricular activities that will enrich their university journey well beyond Freshers week.
For me personally, it was inspiring to see how much energy and passion our community put into making this Freshers Festival truly exceptional. Whether welcoming students moving into halls on Move-In Sunday, or speaking at key events to reassure and excite students about the year ahead, I was consistently reminded of the warmth, inclusivity, and ambition that defines Roehampton.
Freshers 2025 was more than just a festival of events – it was the beginning of countless stories, friendships, and opportunities that will shape the year to come.
Looking forward to an amazing year ahead!
