Roehampton Students’ Union would like to echo the words of Levi Mbiya, our VP Education in offering our solidarity with those across the world who are fighting racism, inequality and oppression at this time.
We continue to stand with our Black Roehampton students and staff. The events seen over the previous week are part of a much wider issue in the world right now. It is an issue that has affected generations of Black people and It is an issue that mustn’t be allowed to continue.
Over the last few years, we have seen countless Black lives lost through incidents (including those, as in the case of George Floyd, which involve police officers) that would not be commonplace among the white community, but are a frequent reminder to Black people of the systemic racism that is placed upon them worldwide.
Levi stated that "to be silent is to be complicit" and to our white and non-black students and staff, we ask that you take the time to educate yourself on this issue. Racism, oppression and inequality should not be seen to be a normality in this day and age.
Here you will find a number of resources at the bottom of this page which will help to inform you of the issues that affect Black people worldwide. As Nelson Mandela said, “It is in your hands, to make a better world for all who live in it”.
We also encourage anyone who is currently affected by this to get in contact with us at email@example.com. You can also message us via social media or live chat on our website.
We are here for you.
