Matthew Delicate is our Environmental Officer here at the RSU. In order to give you an idea of what the role entails, and to hopefully inspire you to run for the role yourself, we spoke to Matthew to find out what it is like being a part-time officer here at Roehampton.
“When I ran for Environmental Officer, truth be told, I didn’t have a lot of experience in regards to sustainability. I would never have thought that within 12 months of that point, I would run a festival twice, give a speech at the student sustainability summit, and co-write the script for a video to be used in parliament to promote sustainability as a focus for the government.
This role alone has made me realise that the university experience isn’t exclusively degree-related, and that actually, I may have gained more valuable experience from it than my degree. I’ve made some fantastic connections across the university, become a recognisable and respected figure, and have changed where I want to go in life because I took a leap of faith in this role. A special thanks goes out to Growhampton, whom without their support, I wouldn’t have been able to develop and achieve in the way I have.
I couldn’t encourage you enough to take this role on, it might just change your life!”
If that sounds fun and inspiring to you (it certainly does to us!) then why not have a go at running for the role in this year’s RSU Elections? Nomination close Friday 8th March at 3pm, so you still have a little time left to put yourself forward.
Like Matthew says, it might just change your life - so go for it!
