Black History Month 2026 - Round Up

We look back at how we celebrated Black History Month this year.

Black History Month 2026 has drawn to a close and we’d like to take a moment to recap all of the events hosted by the Students’ Union in collaboration with the Society of African Students.

These events were about celebrating the history of the black community, as well as recognising the black student community at Roehampton who actively contribute and bring joy to student life here on campus.

Read all about it:

We kicked off our celebrations with our weekly ‘Book Club’ where we looked at Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire by Akala. This book examines structural racism and class inequality that exists within the UK and the impact it has upon shaping people’s livelihoods.

In the following weeks, we hosted three more of these book clubs, with each week a new book and celebrating yet another brilliant black author – such as Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.

Film Night:

Then there was Film Night in the David Bell Cinema, where we screened The Boy who Harnessed the Wind. A story about a boy in Malawi who, against all the odds, invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine. If you missed the screening, the film is available to watch on Netflix!

Getting creative:

Finally, last week we hosted Coffee and Canvas at The Hive Café. This wholesome event gave students the chance to relax with a tasty drink and paint something in honour and in celebration of Black History Month. It was a joy to see all of your paintings and we hope you enjoyed it!

Thank you!

We’d like to thank all the students who came along to these events, as well as the Society of African Students for collaborating with us to help us celebrate and ensure that our student communities feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

But it doesn’t stop there…

Just because the Black History Month is over doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate our student community here at Roehampton still. Head to our events page to take a look at what’s happening on campus HERE.
