7 reasons to be excited about SOCIETIES this year!

  • Freshers’ Fair – Friday 23rd!

As the adrenaline rush from Thorpe Park starts to wear off, freshers’ fair is the place to be on Friday 23rd! With tons of societies, sports teams, performances, and promotions on display all over the Freshers’ Village on Froebel Lawn, around Digby Square and the Union bar, 2016’s freshers’ fair is set up to bigger and better than ever! Come along and see everything that societies and SportRoehampton have to offer, as well as amazing charities working in the local area – this is your opportunity to vote for which charities you think that Roehampton RAG should advocate this year! We have so much going on – definitely not to be missed!

  • Website launch!

Get distracted/miss out on any information at freshers’ fair? Here at the RSU, the communications team have spent the summer developing this fantastic new website that you have found your way to (you lucky thing!). Each society has been evolving their page to provide members with bundles of information; links to their social media pages, discussions of plans and event promotion – and even the chance to sign up online and become an official society member. Have a gander - https://www.roehamptonstudent.com/activities/societies/.

  • Fresh new societies

Over the last few months, a number of students have taken interest in establishing new societies, many of which are fully up and running in preparation for the start of the new term! Fledgling societies that began last year, including both Law and Disney, are developing exciting plans, and new societies that were established over summer are keen to recruit new members at freshers’ fair – including the brand new British Sign Language society!

  • Get your hands dirty!

For the first time ever, the societies and Growhampton – our on campus green initiative – are collaborating in order to provide interactive icebreaker sessions! These sessions will allow new society members of all years and backgrounds to get to know each other through the love of veg! Pick some kale, sow some seeds, and get chatting with your new society-mates – lettuce make friends!

  • Exciting events

Many of our society committees have been spending their summer busily writing notes, making phones calls, and sending emails – planning wonderful events for their wonderful members. The LGBTQ+ have some very exciting plans in place for the RSU’s first drag night, the NHSF Hindu Society are busy organising a Diwali ball alongside other London universities, and a group of various Roehampton societies are working together developing four weeks’ work of amazing activities and events for Black History Month this October!

  • 2nd RSU Awards

Last May saw the first RSU awards night – a formal black tie event held in the marquee on Froebel lawn, in which we celebrated the students’ achievements of the year, including RAG, Programme reps, and of course, societies! Nominations are open for an array of amazing awards - winners are presented their prizes, accompanied by delicious, nutritious food from our very own Hive café. The highlight of the society’s year! More information about the individual awards can be found at https://www.roehamptonstudent.com/union/awards/.

  • Still not interested?

Not impressed by anything we have to offer? It’s never been easier to start your own society. All you need is a unique idea, and 10 keen fellow members - then you’re ready to fill out a new society application form (found at https://www.roehamptonstudent.com/activities/startasociety/). Show us what you have to offer, and do your bit to improve the student experience at Roehampton!
