Minimalism- what is it all about?

Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘less is more’? Minimalism is a philosophy that advocates living a clutter free life.  The ‘minimalist movement’ was officially started by Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus in 2010. Since 2010, they have written many books expanding on their ideas and have featured in many podcasts about minimalism and how to follow a minimalist lifestyle. But, what does it mean to follow a minimalist lifestyle? Their website provides more insight into minimalism: “Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less; rather, we focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth, more contribution, and more contentment. More freedom. Clearing the clutter from life’s path helps us make that room.”

To be a minimalist, you must lead a minimal lifestyle. What minimalism aims to do is get rid of the clutter in our lives. Many people tend to hoard clothing and objects and then never use them again, or own things that they no longer need. What minimalism aims to do is get rid of all of these useless items, and by doing so, allows you to gain more freedom in your life generally.

So, from this we can gather that minimalism isn’t just about getting rid of old items, but about helping people develop a stress free life. Over the past few years, the minimalist movement has gradually grown more and more popular. If you’re a student, and you are interested in minimalism, here are some tips on how to get started.

  1. Step 1- Evaluate: What items do you want to get rid of? Do you think you’ll ever need them again? Don’t be too zealous and throw everything out.
  2. Start slow- You don’t need to throw everything away all at once, it’s best to start slow and see how you find it. Then once you feel confident, you can pick up the pace.

That’s it!  If you feel interested in learning more about minimalism, here are some resources I’ve found online that may be useful for you.
