About Roehampton Swing Dance Society

Are you looking to learn how to tear up the dancefloor? We can help! whether your a complete beginner or a pro. We offer weekly classes, socials and more! Follow our social media pages for updates!

Updates From The Society Team

  • Partner Dance Classes have been paused indefinitely due to teacher arrangements.
  • Our LAST class of 2022 will be held on Friday 2nd December 2022 and our classes will resume on the 27th January 2023.

How Do Our Classes Work?

  • No need for a Dance Partner – Just come along!

  • We usually rotate partners and change lines throughout our partner and solo jazz classes as we have seen that this is the best way to learn to dance in a social setting. It is also a really great way of meeting new people and making friends!

  • We pride ourselves on the welcoming environment and safe space we create in our classes.

Safe Space Policy

We welcome all dancers and music lovers regardless of gender/gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, religion or employment status. We ask everyone to be respectful and do not use any sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or racist language. If you harass someone, you may be asked to leave our class or event, you may also be banned from other classes or events and campus security and Roehampton student union (RSU) may be notified at our discretion and as guided by the complainant.

We ask that you look out for each other, we are one big family! If you feel harassed or are made to feel uncomfortable, please contact the class teacher or front desk immediately. The teacher or person at the front desk will point you in the right direction. If you see someone who looks uncomfortable or upset, ask if they are okay and if they would like you to report any unwanted behaviour to the class teacher or front desk on their behalf.

Partner dancing can involve close contact with others, and we must respect each other’s personal space. If someone tells you that you are making them feel uncomfortable, respect their requirement for space. If someone asks you to dance and you do not want to, you can say “no thank you” – you don’t need to offer an explanation. If you feel uncomfortable dancing with someone then you can stop dancing with them at any time, even halfway through a song. If you ask someone to dance, they say no, respect their decision and ask someone else. No one is obliged to dance with you, and no one should feel obliged to accept a dance if they do not feel like it.

If you would like to make a complaint or pursue a concern, please contact the front desk and ask to speak to Angela, a manager or contact:

Max Tilbrook (Society President) via email – swingdancesociety@roehampton.ac.uk

Or if you would like to speak to a female, contact:

Treya (Society Treasurer) via email –via email swingdancesociety@roehampton.ac.uk

(Please specify if you would like the email read by a male or female in the subject box in your email).

If we consider the situation to be more serious than our experience can deal with, we will take appropriate action to refer the issue to appropriate professionals within the University and act on their guidance.
