Beyond the textbooks. Into practice.

We created the Legal Drafting Society because there is a part of legal education that is easy to overlook: knowing the law is not the same as knowing how to work with it.

At university, we learn legislation, cases and legal principles. But where do we learn to actually draft a contract? To structure a witness statement? To prepare a court form? To write a legal letter, draft a will or turn a complex set of facts into a document that is clear, precise and fit for purpose? These are skills that many students only encounter once they enter professional life — and we believe students should have the opportunity to start developing them now.

The Society brings together students at the University of Roehampton who want to take that step beyond the classroom. Our work centres on practical legal drafting, legal writing and the reasoning behind them, using real-world professional formats such as contracts, wills, witness statements, court documents and professional correspondence. We learn by doing: examining documents, working through problems, drafting, reviewing and improving our work.

And although our foundation is legal drafting, our ambitions are not limited to the legal profession. We welcome students interested in law, politics, policy, economics, business, administration, research and other professional fields, because the ability to understand complicated information, write with precision and produce professional documents is valuable wherever your career takes you.

We are a student-led initiative built by students who want to learn more, practise more and make better use of what they already know. Alongside practical workshops and peer learning, we aim to bring students into contact with academics and legal professionals who can challenge our thinking and show us how these skills operate beyond university.

We believe that some of the most important professional skills are learned by doing — and that there is no reason to wait until graduation to start.
