UCU Industrial Action 20 February - 19 March 2020

Roehampton Students’ Union is aware of the proposed UCU industrial action due to take place over a four week period starting on 20 February and ending on 19 March 2020.

The exact dates UCU are calling upon its members to strike are as follows:

  • Week one: Thursday 20 and Friday 21 February
  • Week two: Monday 24, Tuesday 25, and Wednesday 26 February
  • Week three: Monday 9, Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11, Thursday 12 and & Friday 13 March
  • Week four: Monday 16, Tuesday 17, Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 March

The strike action is set to disrupt teaching across a four week period. It follows an 8 day strike in November and December.

The strike is related to an ongoing national matter relating to pay and conditions.

At an emergency meeting of the Students’ Union Council (SUC) on Thursday 13 February, representative members resolved to not support this period of strike action.

Roehampton Students’ Union enjoys a strong working relationship with academic staff and departments. By working together, the student voice has strengthened in recent times.

The elected SUC representatives of RSU are concerned by the impact the ongoing dispute is having on students and is keen for a solution to be found urgently. Whilst the strike action takes place, RSU is taking steps over the period to help reduce the impact on students by:

  • Requesting academics provide students with advance notice of lecture cancellations.
  • Encourage the university to include workshops in their strike mitigation plans.
  • Seek assurance from the university that students will not be penalised, academically, solely because of the strike action.
  • RSU to liaise with the university to provide study spaces in classrooms.*
  • RSU to work with Sport Roehampton to arrange additional sessions for students displaced by the strike action.
  • RSU to provide de-stress activities throughout the period.

The RSU is working closely with the University throughout this period. A list of frequently asked questions (which addresses how complaints will be handled, compensation and other mitigating factors) is published on the Student Portal.

The RSU Academic Advice Service remains open to all students that wish to seek advice and guidance on any academic matters, including those relating to the strikes.

Please email SU.Advice@roehampton.ac.uk to arrange an appointment or speak with an advisor over the phone.
