RSU Statement

At a meeting of the Students’ Union Council (SUC) on Thursday 21 November 2019, an item was tabled by the Vice President (Welfare and Community) outlining the national position the University and College Union (UCU) have taken in the ongoing dispute over pay and conditions. Roehampton is one of 60 universities, nationally, where UCU industrial action may be taking place between Monday 25 November and Wednesday 4 December 2019; a period of eight working days.

The UCU strike action is linked to two disputes.

·         Pay and Conditions relating to the outcome of the 2019-20 national negotiation round.

·         USS pension changes.

The University of Roehampton is affected by the pay and conditions dispute.

The SUC received a paper outlining the position of UCU and voted in favour of supporting the reasons for the UCU strike action. The Students' Union Council is the representative body for students at the University of Roehampton.  Out of 21 councilors in attendance, 11 voted in favour of supporting the action, 7 against and there were 3 abstentions. In respect of this outcome, the RSU will write formally to the university to express its support of the industrial action and the reasons for it. The RSU will also recognise that students will express their own support for programme lecturers during the period and are welcome to share their plans with the RSU.

The RSU continues to be committed to supporting students. Its full suite of services and functions will remain open throughout the period. Students affected by the industrial action should seek advice from the university in the first instance by visiting the student portal.

Should affected students wish to discuss their situation further, the RSU will provide support and guidance and present the options available to them. Students that would like support should contact the RSU, Lawrence Building, Froebel College between Monday – Friday 09.30 – 4.30.
