April has been and gone and it feels like I was just wrapping up March’s update - we’re speeding through the year.
With the sun beaming down on us and now only two more blog posts to go after this one, I can’t help but think time is secretly training for a marathon. One thing I’ve realized from putting these updates together is how important it is to try and remember what we actually achieved this year for all of you. Thus spans from the Wellbeing Wednesdays, all the campaign work and most importantly meeting so many new students and making memories that'll last a life time.
Seriously, it’s so easy to overlook your own wins until you actually write them down. But enough with the self-congratulations-let’s jump into what I’ve been working on!
Living in London Campaign
I’ve been burning the midnight oil behind the scenes on the "Living in London" campaign, and I’m finally ready to spill the beans!
This campaign is your golden ticket to experiencing the best of London’s buzzing culture without your wallet crying for mercy. Think free museums (hello, British Museum and Tate Modern!), stunning parks, and discounted theatre tickets that won’t have you selling your textbooks. You’ll get to soak up London’s art, history, music, and food scenes without breaking the bank.
But wait, there’s more! We’re also shining a spotlight on affordable on-campus fun - from student societies and sports clubs, to themed nights at The Union Bar and Hive Café. Plus, with Roehampton’s cost-of-living support, community cupboard, and community fridges, you’ll have all the essentials to survive and thrive at uni (and maybe even impress your friends with your budgeting skills).
So, keep your eyes peeled for more details and get ready to unlock a London adventure that’s big on fun and light on your student budget. Because who says you can’t have a blast and still afford your weekly night out in Putney?
Community Cupboard
As the grand finale of uni tenancy approaches and students prepare to flee their nests, we’re keen to keep alive the legendary legacy that Amy Hopkins (last year’s RSU President/all-round superstar) kicked off and we’ve carried on this year. I, Irene (VP Education), and the Sustainability Team have been scheming on how to level this up so every student can snag some eco-friendly goodness when they need it most.
So, brace yourselves for May madness: we’ll be hosting donation days where you can offload your unwanted treasures - because one person’s junk is another’s gold. Then, during the last week of on-campus tenancy, we’re throwing a full-on donation fiesta to stock the cupboard for the fresh-faced students rolling in next year.
It’s like a relay race of generosity, but with less running and more recycling!
Open Day
I’m always a sucker for these days; watching fresh-faced potential students roam the campus like curious squirrels, eyes wide with the kind of eager optimism. It’s like seeing a garden of possibilities sprouting up, and honestly, it’s a joy bomb! Chatting with them, showing off what makes Roehampton uniquely awesome, and giving them the inside scoop on our great little uni feels like a secret handshake for future legends.
And let’s not forget the alumni - our esteemed veterans sharing their tales and memories in an open-ended chat that’s part nostalgia. If you happened to be there that day, picked Roehampton, and spotted me somewhere between the coffee queue and the library, hey there again! You’ve officially been greeted twice now - consider yourself lucky.
