Personal Profile

Hey all! To tell you a little bit about myself first, I’m a libra, I like singing to myself in the shower and I am currently a third-year English Literature student who is going into a PGCE-Secondary next year at Roehampton. This means I’m not leaving!

Within Players, I’ve done a couple of things, here and there. Most of you from this year will know me as the music director for ‘Legally Blonde’.

I’ve been in the society’s committee as the media officer this year, so if you’ve been talking to the Instagram that’s me!

And I helped out backstage with ‘What Fresh Hell is This?’ Taking some of the photos, and playing the sound effects:

And was even involved in the project to take Judgement Day to the Fringe

I’ve also written and directed the ‘Wicked’ Parody from this year. Other credits from Players include:

First Year

Officer Marshal in 191 Days
Simon in 13!
Captain in The Twelfth Night

Second Year

Pianist for Judgement Day
Musical Director of Dogfight
Musical Director of The Convent of Pleasure
Martha Dunstock in Heathers (Parody)

Manifesto Points

Continuing Fundraisers and Amping them up

I’ve seen people from Players do some amazing things, one of which being Aimee Stein, Micah Joseph and Katie Dighton’s ‘BARE: with me’, a short play to raise money for Alopecia UK. This was an inspiring event and journey of Aimee’s and I think that as a society, we should put on another written show this year to raise money for charity. This is a great opportunity to give back and lend our talents to someone/something that needs it.

Alongside the charity idea, I want to be able to provide more fundraisers throughout the year. This includes more Parodies and events like Karaoke Night.

Workshops

I’ll admit as a current committee member, these were supposed to go ahead this year. However, due to circumstances out of our control, we have not been able to. The workshops we have done that I want to bring back include: special effects makeup, acting CVs, audition workshop, songwriting and a new one: what to expect on a creative team.

I think these not only help prepare those for our society, but also for the working world. Even if you’re not planning on going into the theatre industry, they’ve been great opportunities to share advice and expertise and would be great to see reinstated across the year.

Society Involvement in Decisions

I want to involve you in what happens! We do some amazing stuff as a society, but I would love to see more people come forward with their own ideas for events or even campaigns we could do online. This could be anything. That is why I want to propose an online suggestion box throughout the year that’ll be checked once a month. If we like your idea and think it’s feasible, I want us to be able to bring your ideas to life.

I also want to run acting/writing challenges throughout the year. Whoever wins gets a special prize: e.g. their performance is put over all of our social media, or we set up their play in Digby Diner for the evening. I think this is a creative way to encourage creativity in the society and allows more talents to follow suit.

Safe-Space

As someone who has been both a part of cast and crew, I recognise the struggles of putting on a show. It is absolutely amazing when it comes together, and everyone genuinely enjoys and loves doing it. That’s why we do what we do. However, I can also recognise the struggles of putting on a show and the stress that comes with it. That is why I want to bring back the allocated safe-space officer for each show. I think it is vital to have an unbiased opinion of someone not involved in the production space to be able to talk to about worries and concerns. It is important to take care of our society members’ mental health throughout the year, and with the big four shows we do, it is worth having that someone aside for help.

Thanks

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to read through this and for your consideration of me! I also want to thank the current committee, and in particular Jack and Katie for having an amazing year. Players has been an incredible part of my university experience, and I want nothing more than to make it that way for the next gen of Players.

Vote for Me, Rebecca Preece, as Players president.
