Fake It till You Make It (AKA “Pretending You Know How to Write a Committee Campaign” – A Manifesto by Lauren Higginson) (part 2)

(I recommend reading my other manifesto alongside this, which can be found under the tech officer role, as it outlines some more about myself and why I think I make a great addition to the committee in general!)

SSOAP President

Here it is. The big boy. Why I think you should vote me for president!

  • Like I’ve said previously, I have a lot of ideas for how SSOAP can evolve going forward. My main goal, however, is to broaden our opportunities to include all forms of art: due to the nature of the society, our projects have been mainly geared towards theatre and acting, especially this year. Since the society’s name is The Student Society of Art and Performance, I think it would be a really great idea to branch out! Recently in a Facebook group, there was a post about how there doesn’t seem to be a society that encourages singing – I want to be this society! Singing, painting, photography – you name it, we can do it. Cam Turner, your current and amazing president, conceptualised an idea for an immersive art gallery experience, and I would love to stage a music showcase in which performers have free reign over what and how they perform. Ideas like this will really expand the society and interest a wider range of people.
  • I like to think of myself as a friendly face. Since my first year with SSOAP, both our presidents have been someone approachable and easy to talk to, as well as understanding and great listeners. I think of myself as having all of these qualities and I want to be someone that members, new or old, can approach with comments, problems, new ideas, or whatever else they need to talk about.
  • With the help of our fundraiser/treasurer, I also really want to do more for charity. I think we have some really awesome ways of fundraising and I know a lot of the people in the society hold charity very dear to their heart, and I would love to run with this. For example, the music showcase could easily be a once-a-term event like Drunk Drama, with different themes corresponding to different charities. This is ambitious, I know, but seeing the ease with which we put together Drunk Drama every time, I have no doubt that this would be a breeze for us.
  • I’m ambitious, but I’m also realistic. I know how to balance my time, and I’m not afraid to make (gentle) suggestions if I think a project needs a little bit of tweaking. I’m an overthinker, which means I’m prepared for every eventuality, and I’m very used to having to find alternative methods to achieve a goal when what I want just isn’t possible, and I really think SSOAP will benefit from these qualities. I really am confident that I would be a great president and you absolutely wouldn’t regret it if you gave me the opportunity.

You made it to the end! Thank you so much for reading all of this, I really appreciate it. I truly hope you’ll consider voting for me to be part of your committee. Again, if you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m active on Facebook and I’m also available via email at higginsl2@roehampton.ac.uk.

Stay home, take care of yourselves, and wash your hands. Lozz <3
