In the famous words of Chaka Khan, any time you feel danger or fear, as the BAME officer instantly I’ll appear. I believe in representation and inclusivity for all!

Running for

BAME STUDENT OFFICER

Hello

I’m Debbie first year Education student, Programme Rep/mother/Teaching Assistant and Manchester United fan. I may need a quick nap during the day, I regularly eat a whole packet of biscuits in one sitting and yes, I can Netflix and chill a whole series in a single day.

But I’m also a passionate believer in fairness for all, I believe in positive change for a respectful and tolerant environment for all and inclusion and creating opportunities for all.

These issues drive me because I’ve grown up witnessing a lack of representation and all though things are better now there is still a lot more to be done. My personal experiences have led me to be conscientious, hardworking and determined in my life and this is how I would work for you as your Black Asian Minority Ethnic officer.

Who should you vote for?

Me!

A year ago, in the school where I work as a TA, a child told me various reasons why she would never be a ballerina. After talking to her about confidence and how anything is possible, I bought her a book about the first black professional ballerina. She had never seen a black ballerina before, That’s why representation matters. Similarly, I want to see representation of BAME students in all aspects of university life, to encourage and impower you in your time studying at Roehampton University. I’m also very keen to meet you and hear about your day to day experience’s as a BAME student.

My role as Programme Rep gave me the chance to speak to some of you first hand and convey your thoughts about your courses directly to the university.

My wish as the BAME officer is that I can reach even more of you and suggest ways you can be more involved with life on campus outside perusing your degree.

What will I do? What do you need me to do?

Ultimately as the BAME officer I’ll be representing BAME Students’ interests within the Union and University.

I also promise to voice any concerns, new ideas or suggestions you may have by facilitating feedback or drop in opportunities and get the issue resolved.

Be a support system because student life can be hard! by either pointing you to the right departments to further assist you or just a friendly ear over a cup of coffee (I’ll bring the biscuits!).

Support for new BAME students as they enter university life.

To develop more BAME conferences and social events to bond and build networks and friendships between our rich and diverse communities.

Organising BAME professionals and alumni to come in and talk about the field of work you are interested in.

And what about a mini carnival a celebration of the diversity here at Roehampton with food, music and exhibitions, with the whole university coming together to enjoy.

It would be an honour to be your BAME officer and working with you over the coming year.
