HADI EL-MOKDAD

Hello Southlands,

My name is Hadi El-Mokdad and I am running to become your new Southlands Deputy President.

Originally, I came to this university and stayed on whitelands campus however, very quickly I found myself falling in love with Southlands College and all it had to offer. Being an active member of the southlands community has not only filled me with college pride but has also helped me progress as a student as well as a person. Now this opportunity has arrived where I can help shape this campus to make the experience for everyone here as amazing as my 3 years have been.

I have been lucky enough to represent the Southlands Sharks football team for the last 3 years which has truly ingrained a pure love and passion for the college I call home. I decided to become a flat rep for Southlands this year to help my freshers have an amazing experience and now I cannot pass up an opportunity to help the Southlands community be the best it can be!

My Ideas

  • London is an amazing city and we are lucky enough to be right on its doorstep. However, it can be very daunting for new-comers and our international population. I feel that organised trips to London would not only give an opportunity for people to socialise and interact with one-another but would also help people get the most out of this amazing city.
  • Southlands has a large off-campus and international student body which makes us an accepting and diverse community. I would like to organise welcome dinners/ international welcome evenings as it will give students who come from far and wide the opportunity to join the sharks’ family because the students make Southlands the community that it is.
  • Social media is constantly bringing people closer together and I would like to increase the student voice online as I feel it will encourage people to voice their ideas on they want to happen in their college because at the end of the day it’s YOUR college and YOU should have a say in what happens on it.
  • We have a great social space in the form of ‘The Reef’ which I see as having potential to become a hub of life - like an actual reef. I believe that giving groups of students/ flats the opportunity to use The Reef as the great social space it is, will help to instil the sense of a welcoming college. Whether it is to watch football matches or a flat/ college movie night. I want The Reef to be available for ALL.
  • ‘The Quad’ can be another great social space (when it stops raining). I would like to organise a Southland Shark Week. Inspired from the National geographic shark week the Southland Shark week will be a week-long celebration including events such as Shark Open air movie night, Shark barbeque as well as an Intra-Southlands sports day as Uni can be tough and nothing brings back childhood nostalgia like an end-of-year sports day – bring on the egg and spoon race!

All in all I just want to create an enjoyable and welcoming atmosphere for every single student, maintain college pride and allow Southlands to be the college that YOU’RE proud to call home.
