Building a Better Working world One Student at a Time

Howdy everyone!

My name is Dante Thompson and I am running for Whitelands Deputy President this 2020/21 academic year! I am a second year BSc Accounting student living here in Beverly and have received a warm welcome from the community, my flat mates, and others around me that have turned into close friendships! I hope you can share my vision in with our current Whitelands President Libby to make Whitelands are more wholesome and hailing community.

In order to move forward with our ideal vision of what Whitelands as a whole and what I can do to help, I have created a three-step model which will reflect my actions if I am elected Deputy President:

1. Let’s have some fun

a. I plan to set up a Movie Night, at the minimum once monthly, utilizing any of the various streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, etc.). Additionally, I know that not everyone is open to just watching movies which is why I am putting together digital Meet-and-Greets with quizzes and online games open to all with prizes available at the end of each event.

b. I hope to bring across some enjoyable activities and celebrations to Whitelands campus for the rest of the academic year. Whether it is digital events and prizes or grab and go items just like what the College Community Leaders do for Southlands and Digby colleges, the students living on and off campus deserve more in accordance with the tuition and accommodation payments made so far!

2. Facility Changes

a. Now more than ever, we all cherish our free time and the time to socialize with one another in the halls, in/out of class, and in the Sett and Café on the 2nd floor. With this said though, it still holds the same concerns and central problem that was addressed last year which is that it’s too cramped! I plan to rearrange the seating and eating areas to make it more accessible and social friendly.

b. The Sett provides some pretty delicious meals that can cater to all takers. In addition to the current menus offered, I am going into talks to help the chefs prepare designated meals for cultural and religious days diversifying its audience and minimalizing its alienating audience!

3. Asking what I can do for you

a. Coming into this role a lot later in the term puts myself into a question of do we actually need a Deputy President if we have made it this far? Yes and yes. I am that person for you to not only take your ideas, concerns, and wishes to the next level.

b. I currently work with the Student Ambassadors to help deliver weekly food bags, treat bags, test kits, and post to isolating flats on all campuses. This issue becomes personal as there has been a few isolating flats on Whitelands and I aim to keep commuting, residential, and students from main campus safe by addressing the needs and lacking items isolating flats may require.
