SU Elections

What is a By-Election?

If you’re sat reading this thinking, “Hang on, didn’t we just have Student Leadership Elections?”, you’d be right. Well spotted. But Elections season isn’t over just yet, and here’s why.

For the first time this year, we combined our Student Group Elections with our Sabbatical Officer and Part-time Officer Elections, so everything happened in one election period. But sometimes, positions don’t get any nominations, which means no one is elected into those roles. This mostly happens within Student Groups, and there can be loads of reasons for it, people being too busy, not knowing what the role involves, or simply missing the deadline.

To help keep these groups running and student-led, we hold By-Elections. They’re basically a smaller version of the main elections and give students another chance to put themselves forward for any unfilled roles.

So, maybe you weren’t ready to run the first time around. Or maybe you just weren’t sure what was involved. Either way, now’s your chance to give it a go.

What roles are available?

This By-Election, the only available roles are Student Group Committee roles. Every student group has at least three core roles that are required for a group to be active: President, Secretary and Treasurer. Student groups can add additional, specific roles as required. If your group has them, you will be able to stand and vote for these additional positions too!

President

Is the first point of contact for the society, and takes the lead on key responsibilities such as chairing meetings; ensuring risk assessments are completed; working with stakeholders; leading events, etc.

Secretary

Takes the lead on the administrative functions of the society (e.g., room booking requests; submitting forms; guest speaker requests), as well as leading on your society’s communications and record keeping duties (e.g., keeping meeting minutes).

Treasurer

Takes the lead on the financial matters for the society. This includes responsibilities such as signing off expenses; ensuring students have purchased a membership to join your society; submitting bids for Grant Funding etc.
