So you want to stand in the elections and represent students, but you’re not sure which role is right for you?

There are a range of roles available, each with different responsibilities, time commitments, and ways to make an impact. Whether you want to lead on big student issues, represent your course, or support specific student communities, there’s a role to suit you.

Roles

Full-Time Sabbatical Officers

We’re led by a team of two elected student leaders known as Sabbatical Officers who are elected annually during our Student Leadership Elections: President Education and President Community. Every candidate for one of these role must have a candidate meeting with a senior member of SU staff. You can find more about candidate meetings here.

President Education

The President Education will focus on every aspect of the academic experience, ensuring students feel their degree offers real value. It involves leading on key areas such as teaching quality, educational support, career development, curriculum design, and supports the Programme and School Reps.

A key part of the role is representing student academic interests to the University, the SU and external partners, and running campaigns and activities that address the issues shaping students’ education.

President Community

The President Community will focus on all aspects of university life beyond the classroom, ensuring students feel safe, supported, and a true sense of belonging at Roehampton. It involves leading on key areas such as sustainability, housing, cost of living, mental health, student communities, student groups, and events.

A core part of the role is to represent student interests to the University, the Students’ Union and external partners, and to lead impactful campaigns and activities that respond to the key issues affecting students.

Part-Time Officers

College Presidents and College Deputy Presidents represent the interests, needs, and experiences of students within their respective Colleges. They work closely with College staff, the Students' Union, and University partners to ensure student feedback informs decision‑making.

Together, these roles support the delivery of Student Priorities, gather insights from the student community, and act as key representatives at Students’ Union Council and other forums.

College President

As the lead representative for your College, you will:

  • Champion students’ views to the University, SU, and key stakeholders.
  • Build strong working relationships with College staff to influence decision‑making.
  • Work closely with the Deputy President to coordinate feedback, priorities, and campaign ideas.
  • Help strengthen collaboration between your College, the SU, and other Colleges.

College Deputy President

As the supporting representative for your College, you will:

  • Assist the College President and act in their place when required.
  • Help gather, organise, and analyse student feedback to identify priorities.
  • Represent your College at events and activities.
  • Promote SU and College initiatives to encourage student engagement.
  • Work with other Part-Time Officers, Colleges, and SU staff to build a strong inter‑College community.

Student Group Committee Members

Every student group has at least three core roles that are required for a group to be active: President, Secretary and Treasurer. Student groups can add additional, specific roles as required. If your group has them, you will be able to stand and vote for these additional positions too!

President

Is the first point of contact for the society, and takes the lead on key responsibilities such as chairing meetings; ensuring risk assessments are completed; working with stakeholders; leading events, etc.

Secretary

Takes the lead on the administrative functions of the society (e.g., room booking requests; submitting forms; guest speaker requests), as well as leading on your society’s communications and record keeping duties (e.g., keeping meeting minutes).

Treasurer

Takes the lead on the financial matters for the society. This includes responsibilities such as signing off expenses; ensuring students have purchased a membership to join your society; submitting bids for Grant Funding etc.
