Ensuring that your academic life is as academically stimulating, productive and as fair as possible here at the University of Roehampton!

Hello everyone!

My name is Stephen and I'm a third year Primary Education student. Throughout my time at university I have had the opportunity to be the vice-president for the music society, the president of the steel pans band and the treasurer for the Roehampton Players. As well as this I have been part of the ‘Roehampton Jazz Band’, music directed two shows, hosted a podcast and worked as a student ambassador!

Through my experience whilst on my course I have developed key leadership skills, as well as working with others in a team setting. I have the skillset required to represent the students of Roehampton University to enhance the academic process so that students can unlock and reach their full potential.

Mitigating circumstances - improve stigma and establish uniform system

Whilst my degree has been academically stimulating and enjoyable, there have been moments where I have had to access academic support to gain mitigating circumstances. My primary objective would be breaking the negative stigma around applying for extra support and ensuring that all assignments, that have been granted extra time, get submitted through Turnitin. This ensures an even playing field whereby all submissions get analysed and plagiarism checked.

More opportunities for students on Wednesday afternoon

This year’s campaign to keep Wednesday afternoons free of lectures, so that students can get involved with the many sporting activities that the university hosts, has been very successful. I pledge to take this campaign further by providing more opportunities for students who may have interests in other areas. I would like to work with societies to put on non-sporting activities for students to take part in. I also want to work closely with the RSU Volunteering department to promote fantastic opportunities such as the ‘Grow-hampton’ project!

Ensuring a break every hour during lectures to refresh - efficient work ethic

With the hours that students spend in lectures and seminars, it is important that the time for study is as efficient as possible. With studies showing correlations between taking regular breaks and increased engagement, I want to ensure that all lectures give students a five-minute break every hour. This will help improve productivity, creativity and mental well-being.

Standardise moderation in all assignment modules

With so many students choosing to study at Roehampton, it is vital that the marking process remains as consistent as possible. I pledge to work with academics to promote moderation throughout all modules to keep results as non-bias as possible.

Ensure Moodle is up to date

Moodle is the online central hub for all academic modules and an invaluable tool for students and lecturers to communicate. I pledge to be a point of communication between students and academics to ensure that all Moodle modules remain up date with fully functional hyperlinks throughout the year!

Voting for me enables me to support you to the fullest and ensures your ability to unlock and achieve your full potential academically, here at the University of Roehampton.
