Manifesto – International Student’s Officer

WHO AM I?

Hello everyone, my name is Joel Ebenezer Job, and I am running to be your next International Student’s Officer. As an international student myself, I feel there is a lot of room for international students to be involved in university programs and activities.

The encouragement to apply for the role comes from my current job as a student ambassador. During my job, I had the exposure to know more about the university and its services to students of Roehampton and, this role developed my interest in working with international students specifically. I am also currently pursuing MBA in business school and am motivated to make the international student experience successful for all international students. I believe my leadership, intercultural skills, and experience from working towards student representation will be an ally to create a sense of community and union among international students at Roehampton after I am elected.

WHY ME?

Being an international student since the year of 2019 in the United Kingdom has provided me with the opportunity and time to learn about the challenges faced by international students. I wholeheartedly believe that support to international students must be available with ease to devour any chances of the feeling of isolation or estrangement among us.

WHAT ARE MY PLANS?

My priority is to spread the message of the broader horizon of opportunities available to international students at the university. At the same time, being accessible to support international students in terms of their queries both academic and non-academic.

If elected, I will:

  • Be more active and effectively represent international students in all campuses and courses.
  • Create a mentoring system for international students where older students/ alumni can advise freshers on their queries.
  • Publish transparent and timely reports about the action plans carried out during term time.
  • Create a robust system that eases the process of obtaining an academic reference from personal tutors.
  • Raise awareness and enable international student participation in social events to attain an international network for when they arrive.
  • Work with the RSU officers to engage and advance agendas on behalf of the international students
  • Campaign for increased funding and more scholarships for international students.
  • Organise events focused on integrating cultural societies and celebrating racial diversity by holding cultural and multicultural events (e.g.balls/dinners).

My interest to run for the post of International Student Officer is backed by the spirit of servant-leadership and making a visible difference. This role is apt for me to utilize my experiences and skills that can have a positive influence on the international student experience.
