HOW DO I START A SOCIETY?
Ok so none of the societies here really tickle your fancy... why not start up your own?
Here’s 5 quick and easy steps to starting a new society.
1) Think of an idea:
This might sound obvious but when you are thinking of a new society remember that it has to be something interests other people (10 to be precise), it also has to be a group which is without prejudice and will not offend any one! Also do your research and make sure that society doesn’t already exist!
2) Find some like minded people:
Now you have to find 10 people other than yourself that are genuinely interested in joining you society. Not only do you have to find them but you have to get their student numbers, email addresses and signatures (hand this in with your proposal).
3) Make a proposal:
The idea for your society will need to be approved by the RSU just to make sure it complies with step 1.This can either be written by hand or sent in an email to Tash at natasha.blake@roehampton.ac.uk. In the proposal write a short summary of what your society will do and what its aims and objectives will be.
4) Write a constitution:
Once your proposal has been approved its time to write your societies constitution! This may sound hard but don’t panic its very easy! You need to get hold of the ‘How 2’ booklet which you can either pick up from the RSU or Tash can email it to you. It will explain everything you need to do and will also give you some advice and tips along the way.
5) Elect your committee:
A president, secretary and treasurer are the bare minimum for a committee but most societies have a few more people on the committee to make the job easier. The committee will make the decisions on behalf of the society so be careful who you vote for!
Once all these steps are completed you’re away and a fully fledged RSU society!
