Not only will this be a chance for volunteers to meet loads of new friends while enhancing their team building skills, afterwards our volunteers can enjoy some outdoor entertainment as we all sit back and admire our efforts with a few drinks and chilled out music before sending off Chinese lanterns under the Harvest moon.
This really is going to be one of many M.A.D volunteering events not to be missed!

This event is packed with fun and really does make a positive difference to the lives of many isolated and lonely elderly people living in the local area. Volunteers will team up with the charity ‘Regenerate-Rise’ to hold their very own tea party …with a twist! Obviously there’ll still be plenty of tea, biscuits and lovely cup cakes for us all to enjoy but we’ll be using this project as an opportunity to teach our guests how to play on the wii and surf the net! Recent reports have shown that over 9 million people aren’t online –with the majority being over the age of 65 -–so let’s make a difference & get them connected! …and that’s not all! We have a West End singer coming along to perform some old time classics! So put on your dancing shoes!
Yet another M.A.D. event not to be missed! Come and connect with the elderly, it certainly is going to (be) M.A.D.!

PROJECT 4 – CAROLATHON
Date: Thursday, 15th December
Time: From TBA
Location: Starting outside the RSU (opposite The Union Bar)
Project info:
Chapel St is a registered charity and change agency working to make change happen in community life. There is often a real health gap between resourced and under-resourced communities around the country. In London alone, the gap in life expectancy differs significantly between richer and poorer boroughs. Board the tube at Westminster and get off in Lambeth and someone's life just got shorter - by 7 years! Chapel St are therefore organising a ‘Christmas Carolthon’ to raise money for community health project’s in deprived areas. Their team will be running 26 miles around London and stopping off to perform 13 carol concerts along the way.
In support of this fabulous fundraiser, RSU are holding their very own ‘Mini-Carolathon’ at Roehampton University. We’ll be taking a light jog around Roehampton Grounds (max 2miles) and stopping off at various points to raise money by singing Christmas Carol’s. With a (suggested) donation of £1 to take part, what better way to see out the winter term and welcome in the festive season? We’ll also be adding a competitive element by getting into teams (Student’s Union, Roehampton Sport, Froebel, Digby, Southland’s & Whiteland’s) to see who can raise the most money! Each team will be allocated a fancy-dress theme to add to the fun!
So if you fancy a bit of a fun run or maybe you’d just like to come along and sing some Christmas Carols… Come and join RSU’s Mini Carolathon! It’s for a great cause and all money raised will make a difference by helping create health programs that will start to address issues affecting people’s health prospects in community life.

PROJECT 5 - POST A SMILE TO A SICK CHILD
PROJECT 5 - POST A SMILE TO A SICK CHILD
Date: Tuesday, 31st January 2012
Time: 1pm – 4pm
Location: RSU Meeting room/Putney
Project info:
Post Pals is a charity dedicated to providing seriously ill children with letters and gifts to help them cope with their illnesses and make them smile. Letters, emails and presents have a hugely positive impact on the children, who love to receive them. The youngest
Post Pal volunteer is a toddler who draws pictures to cheer up hospital walls, and the oldest is a 106 year old who knits finger puppets for the kids!
This Project requires 10 volunteers who would like to ‘Make a Difference’ by writing to a sick child. Volunteers will come together and each be given a child’s individual story (including a picture and details of their interests) -from which they can choose to either write a letter; design a postcard/picture; send a toy; record a short video; or any other creative idea they may have!
Following the briefing, as a group we will travel into Putney to pick up any craft materials, toys, games, etc that we need (RSU will provide a budget of £3 per Child + the cost of postage) and then we will return to University to put together our letters, etc. RSU will also be making a short video of the day in order to raise awareness of this wonderful charity and this will be posted on the Students Union Website.
This is just one of many ‘inspiring’ M.A.D. (Make a Difference) Projects -why not begin the year knowing that a poorly child is smiling because of YOU.

Project info:
A group of students and staff volunteers recently started work on an outdoor volunteering project that aims to restore the c.100 year old Froebel Orchard! As you can imagine this project is no small endeavor and requires a ‘labour of love’ set to span over several parts, the first one having taken place just before Christmas.
Volunteers will be required to stick on their wellies and come down to the Orchard for a day of graft in the garden! Roehampton students and staff will work together with the support of the London Orchard Project team, who are providing funding for the project, and a local branch of the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
The London Orchard Project will create a resource to be enjoyed by our staff, students and local community groups, such as the local Forest School, for years to come. Additionally it will help to increase on-campus biodiversity, increasing the numbers of bird, insect and plant species.
So if you’re passionate about the environment and you want to help restore this beautiful part of the university (that not many of us even know about) –‘Make a Difference’, join in the fun by coming along and giving us a hand!
–FREE lunch will also be provided!!
