► NSS & Feedback

What is it?
The National Student Survey (NSS) is now entering its eighth year. The NSS is a census of students in their final year of a course leading to undergraduate credits or qualifications across the UK. Its your chance to have your say about what you liked and didn’t like about your learning experience during your time in higher education. Student feedback is used to compile year on year comparative data that is:

1) Published on Unistats.com where prospective students and their advisors can use the results to help make informed choices of where and what to study
2) Useful to your university, students’ union or college to facilitate best practice and enhance the student learning experience.

You, along with your peers will be asked to answer a series of 22 questions ranging from organisation and management of your course through to assessment and feedback, which the University will be scored on individually

National Student Survey 2011: Institutional Performance

Overview
The National Student Survey (NSS) is conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of HEFCE, with the main purpose to help inform the choices of prospective students about where and what to study. Participating institutions and students’ unions can also make use of the data to improve the student learning experience.
The NSS survey is sent to final year undergraduate students in participating institutions, including all publicly funded higher education institutions in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and some institutions in Scotland; some privately funded higher education institutions; and all further education colleges in England that offer HEFCE-funded provision within the scope of the survey. All types of undergraduate students are included. This gives an opportunity to look at the performance and compare it with the sector average and the peer institutions.

There are 22 main questions in the survey, for which results can be aggregated to six areas:
• The teaching on my course
• Assessment and feedback
• Academic support
• Organisation and management
• Learning resources
• Personal development

In addition there is one question relating to overall satisfaction with the quality of the course.
For the six areas listed above, the results are the average of the statements contributing to that area called the Mean Score. The % Agree score reflects the combined percentage of students responding "Definitely Agree" and "Mostly Agree" to the questions. The measure used in the results presented in this report is the percentage of respondents agreeing with each statement.

This short report looks at Roehampton University’s (RU) own performance in the last 5 years, 2007 to 2011, across the seven criteria.
